Virtual PC 5.x

Virtual PC started off originally as an x86 emulator for PowerPC Macintosh to run MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows. Connectix, the company that made it, was purchased by Microsoft. Virtual PC was then retooled into a virtualization tool for x86 systems. Microsoft discontinued Virtual PC in favor of a server-oriented virtualization product called Hyper-V.

On the desktop, Virtual PC competed with VMWare and featured better compatibility with a wider array of guest operating system.

Release notes

This version supports both Mac OS 9.1 and Mac OS X 10.1 "Puma" as the host system, and can now deal with Windows XP as a guest system. Versions were available with pre-installed PC-DOS, Windows 98, Windows 2000 and Windows XP Home.

The last update was 5.0.4 on June 25, 2002.

Last version from Connectix.

Vesion 5.2 for Windows is the first Virtual PC to drop Windows 9x support and only work on Windows NT4 SP6, 2000 and XP. This seems to be one of the later releases of Virtual PC 5.2 as it still uses Connectix but has an installer dated after the Microsoft acquisition.
