It started off on the Apple II and Commodore 64 where it became popular for its simplicity and ease of use. It competed against PrintMaster Gold. Some versions were bundled with The Print Shop Deluxe for Windows.

Originally a virus scanner and disk utility set for Macintosh and PC from Microcom, who then became Datawatch, sold the Macintosh version of Virex to Dr. Solomon's. In 1998 all of this was bought out by Network Associates - a merger of McAfee and Network General Corp.

Using U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Digital Elevation Model (DEM) files, Vistapro can accurately recreate real world landscapes in vivid detail.
