Photoshop is a powerful drawing and photo manipulation program for both Mac and Windows. The Macintosh version was released by Adobe in 1990, although a very small number were bundled with Barneyscan slide scanners prior to that. Photoshop contained many advanced features including layered images, advanced color control, and plug-ins. Prior to its release, many of its features were only found in high end dedicated photo pre-processing systems.
When it was brought to the Windows platform from the Macintosh in 1993 it initially competed against Micrografx Picture Publisher. Over the years, It competed with many other image editors such as Paint Shop Pro.
It was considered the number one leader in advanced image editing until Adobe moved to a so-called "cloud" based subscription model.
This release adds PNG support and is the final version to run on 68k Macintosh.
Photoshop 4 is also the last version that runs under Windows 3.1 with Win32s.
4.0 for Windows will not run on a machine with 1 GB of RAM or more. The 4.0.1 update corrects this.
