Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing 1.0, sometimes called "Pen Windows" is an add-on for Microsoft Windows 3.1 intended specifically for mobile and embedded devices. It uses a pen/stylus for input and offers hand writing recognition for note taking.
Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing adds pen input capabilities, includes an on-screen keyboard, a notepad program for writing with the stylus, and a handwriting recognition program. It was licensed by OEMs and bundled with their hardware.
At release, there was a lot of hype about pen computing. But this was short lived, as the Windows 3.1 user interface was not very conducive to mobile devices, even with these add-on.
Windows for Pen Computing 2.0, also called Pen Services for Windows 95 was released in 1995 for Microsoft Windows 95.
